Mahindra Thar OG Launched in India: New Platform, 6 Airbags and More Powerful Engines

Fresh Design, Familiar Thar Identity The Thar OG continues with its familiar boxy silhouette but receives several visual updates. The front now features a redesigned grille, C-shaped DRLs, updated LED headlamps and LED fog lamps. New 19-inch alloy wheels, revised LED tail lamps and distinctive OG badging further differentiate the updated model. New exterior shades, including Artemis Silver and Jeans Blue, have also been introduced.

More Premium and Comfortable Cabin Inside, Mahindra has focused on improving comfort and the overall cabin experience. The SUV gets a Truffle Brown leatherette interior, while rear passengers benefit from a redesigned armrest with integrated cupholders. Updates to the infotainment and convenience features also make the cabin feel more modern than before.

Six Airbags Now Standard Safety is one of the major areas of improvement. The Thar OG comes with six airbags as standard across the range. Electronic Stability Program (ESP), traction control and hill-related assistance features are also available. Higher variants additionally offer features such as front parking sensors.

New Platform and Suspension Setup A major mechanical change is the adoption of Mahindra’s M_Glyde 4G platform. The SUV uses a Pentalink rear suspension setup with Watts Link and Frequency Dependent Damping technology. These changes are intended to improve ride comfort and better control body movement, particularly on uneven roads. Another important change is the introduction of Electric Power Steering (EPS) in place of the previous hydraulic setup, which should make low-speed manoeuvring and city driving easier.

Three Engine Options The Thar OG continues to offer multiple powertrain choices. The 1.5-litre diesel produces around 119 hp and 300 Nm, while the updated 2.2-litre diesel develops around 152 hp and 330 Nm. The 2.0-litre turbo-petrol produces around 162 hp and 330 Nm. Depending on the variant, buyers can choose between manual and automatic transmissions as well as RWD and 4WD configurations.

Off-Road Capability Remains a Priority Despite the added comfort and technology, the Thar OG continues to focus on off-road performance. Selected 4WD variants offer an Electronic Locking Differential (ELD) along with dedicated terrain modes such as Mud, Sand and Snow, helping the SUV maintain traction across challenging surfaces.

Price The Mahindra Thar OG starts at ₹10.32 lakh and goes up to ₹18.99 lakh, ex-showroom. With this update, Mahindra has retained the compact three-door formula while adding more safety equipment, improved cabin comfort, stronger powertrains and significant mechanical upgrades.
