Renault is reportedly preparing a new hybrid powertrain for the upcoming Bridger SUV. Instead of using a conventional 4-cylinder setup, the company is now working on a compact 1.2-litre 3-cylinder hybrid engine aimed at delivering better fuel efficiency and lower running costs.
The upcoming engine is expected to use advanced combustion technology inspired by AVL’s H12 concept along with a Miller-cycle based setup. This combination is designed to improve thermal efficiency while keeping the engine compact and lightweight.
Why Renault Is Choosing a 3-Cylinder Hybrid
According to industry reports, the smaller 3-cylinder layout helps save space inside the engine bay. This allows easier packaging of hybrid components such as electric motors and battery systems.
A hybrid system can also compensate for the lower power output typically seen in smaller petrol engines. The electric motor assists during acceleration, improving performance while maintaining fuel economy.
Focus on Better Mileage
Renault’s main target with this setup appears to be maximizing mileage. The company may adopt technology similar to high-efficiency hybrid systems already showcased globally by powertrain specialist AVL.
Reports suggest the concept has already been tested internationally on vehicles similar to the Dacia Duster platform. Some early efficiency claims indicate extremely low fuel consumption figures under ideal test conditions.
Tax and Efficiency Advantage
Another possible reason behind keeping engine displacement close to the 1.2-litre category could be taxation benefits in markets like India. Smaller engines generally help manufacturers optimize costs while also improving fuel economy ratings.
If launched successfully, the Renault Bridger could become one of the brand’s most fuel-efficient SUVs in India’s growing hybrid vehicle segment.
Expected Positioning
The Bridger is expected to target buyers looking for:
* SUV styling with lower fuel costs
* Hybrid efficiency without going fully electric
* Compact dimensions with practical space
* Reduced emissions and better city drivability
Renault has not officially revealed the final specifications yet, but the project signals the company’s stronger push toward hybrid technology for future Indian models
