Government May Introduce Special FASTag Category for Toll-Exempt Vehicles
20 May 2026
The central government is reportedly working on a separate FASTag category for toll-exempt vehicles as India moves towards a barrier-free toll collection system under the Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) model. The proposal is aimed at improving vehicle identification and reducing technical issues for authorized vehicles using the automated tolling network.
According to reports, the new system is being designed to support smoother movement for exempted vehicles, including defence, police, paramilitary, and selected government-use vehicles.
⸻
What Is MLFF Tolling?
The upcoming MLFF tolling system is expected to use:
* AI-based toll processing
* Satellite-supported tracking
* Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology
Unlike traditional toll plazas, vehicles under the MLFF system may not need to stop for toll payments. The system is designed to automatically identify vehicles and process toll charges digitally while vehicles continue moving.
⸻
Why a Separate FASTag Category Is Being Considered
Reports suggest that existing toll technology may face challenges in correctly identifying certain toll-exempt vehicles. In some cases, exempted vehicles could receive incorrect toll deductions or automated violation notices if the system fails to verify them properly.
To address this issue, authorities are considering a dedicated FASTag classification for authorized exempt-category vehicles. The objective is to reduce unnecessary toll disputes and improve system efficiency once MLFF tolling expands across highways.
⸻
How the Proposed System May Work
Under the proposed arrangement:
* Certain exempted vehicles may receive specially categorized FASTags
* Defence and government vehicles could be digitally pre-authorized within the system
* Vehicle identification may rely on linked registration databases and number plate verification
There are also reports suggesting that some official defence vehicles may eventually be identified directly through secured registration systems without requiring standard FASTag processing.
⸻
Why This Matters
India’s toll collection network is gradually moving toward fully automated and contactless operations. However, automated toll systems depend heavily on accurate vehicle recognition and real-time verification.
Creating a dedicated FASTag category for exempt vehicles could help:
* Reduce false toll deductions
* Minimize wrongful e-challans
* Improve highway traffic flow
* Support faster adoption of MLFF tolling technology

AMPYAN Insight
The transition toward AI-based toll collection marks a major technological shift for India’s highway infrastructure. While MLFF systems can improve traffic movement and reduce congestion at toll plazas, the success of the system will depend on highly accurate vehicle recognition, secure data management, and reliable backend integration across states and agencies.
At present, the proposal remains under discussion, and final implementation details are yet to be officially announced by the concerned authorities.
